The Institute

Methodology

How the American Ranking Institute scores, ranks and re-verifies products. Published in full, because a ranking you cannot inspect is an advertisement.

The ARI Score

Every ranked product receives one ARI Score from 0 to 100, per category placement, built from four published components:

ComponentWeightWhat it measures
Product performance40%Verified specifications, capability, build quality and durability. Manufacturer claims are checked, and inflated specifications are discounted, never rewarded.
Company accountability25%The company behind the product: US presence, reachable support, warranty terms honored in practice, and parts availability over the product’s life.
Owner satisfaction20%Verified owner experience and review evidence, weighted for authenticity and volume.
Value15%Delivered performance per dollar against direct category competitors.

Weights are fixed per category and published on the category page before its ranking. Where a category demands it (for example, trial and returns in Sleep), a component may be specialized — never silently changed.

Star ratings

The ARI Score is displayed as a star rating in half-star steps. Five stars requires a score of 93 or higher. Stars rate the product against its whole market, not against the other products on the page — a weak category’s Top 10 can honestly contain four-star products.

The accountability gate

No product reaches five stars on performance alone. A failing company accountability subscore (below 70) caps the published rating at four stars, regardless of the total. A superb product from a company that cannot be reached, will not honor its warranty, or cannot supply parts is not a five-star recommendation.

List sizes

A subcategory ranking shows a maximum of 10 products. A department’s flagship ranking shows a maximum of 30, drawn from across its subcategories. These are ceilings, not quotas: a category with seven qualifying products publishes seven.

No paid placement

Rankings, scores and awards cannot be bought, and no payment changes a product’s position. Sponsorship, where it exists, is labeled as sponsorship and kept separate from rankings.

Re-verification

Rankings are living documents. Scores are re-verified on a published cycle and whenever a product, its price, or its company materially changes; changes are logged on the ranking page.
